Kerry School of Music Commission
The Kerry School of Music played a very important role in Murrough’s early music development. Beginning with banjo lessons and jazz guitar lessons, Murrough eventually became a guitar teacher at the school from 2015 to 2019. In the summer of 2020, Kerry School of Music Director Aidan O Carroll commissioned Murrough to write a piece (The Milesians) to mark the School’s 40th anniversary.
The Milesians is a 9-minute work for SATB chamber choir and small orchestra. Cast in three short movements, the piece brings the listener on a fascinating journey through Celtic Mythology and the tales surrounding the Milesians, the final race to arrive and settle in Ireland. The work’s premiere has been postponed on several occasions due to Covid-19 restrictions. However, its first performance has been rescheduled and is due to take place in the in the autumn of 2022.
