Litmus Papers - Orchestral Premiere

On 12 March 2022, the University of Manchester Symphony Orchestra premiered Murrough’s piece Litmus Papers in the Whitworth Hall.

Over the past year, Murrough has been studying the work of synaesthetic composers in order to learn more about the fascinating connection between harmonic colour in music and visual colour in art. Litmus Papers examines 4 colours (orange, green, coral red and indigo) and tries to represent their unique visual qualities and properties through music. Eleanor Jarvis, a third year undergraduate conducting student of Robert Guy, conducted the premiere. The piece was followed by Michael Tippet’s monumental work, A Child of our Time, to conclude what was a wonderful evening of orchestral and choral music.
